The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP) is delighted to announce the winner of the ITP Apprentice of the Year Award 2009. The judges were looking for an ambitious career-oriented Apprentice with a good work-life balance who participates in activities that reflect well on their company.
After months of searching the judges narrowed it down to three leading candidates – Alice Ryan (Openreach), Will Osborne (BT Operate) and Myles Neal (BT Retail), with Alice Ryan emerging the deserved winner. The judges also commended Paralympian Richard Fox (BT Global Services) who was duly recognised with a Special Merit Award.
Alice Ryan impressed the judges on all the criteria, particularly given her rapid impact on the business. This included an important contribution to a significant revenue generating product. She had also found the time to take part in meetings with politicians and appear in the national press and on Radio 1.
Alice chose the apprentice route instead of attending University and has demonstrated self-belief in pursuing her chosen path. She is studying for a degree in Telecommunications and Management and is determined to continue making her mark. The judges believe she has the capability and motivation to progress her career into management grades.
Myles Neal was commended for his willingness to take on challenging tasks, coupled with his dedication to environmental causes. Myles created a team to coincide with BT’s sustainability and environment strategy. As a result he now directly manages ten people from all different regions and countries including Brazil. The team has assisted with the target of an 80% reduction in CO2 intensity world-wide by 2020.
Will Osborne is a power engineer who used his engineering skills and knowledge to repair faults as efficiently as possible. Will developed a new practise for backing up important software for standby diesel generators. Whilst on secondment to BT Innovate Will helped develop a ‘Networks CO2 reduction strategy’, which once delivered, could reduce BT’s carbon footprint by 30% and save £40million+ a year in electricity bills.
Richard Fox receives a Special Merit for his contribution to his company’s Olympic sponsorship activities, which is built on his personal Paralympics activity. Richard used his personal involvement to the benefit of the Company’s objectives, as the Official Telecommunications Company for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. Richard attended various events and seized every opportunity to promote Paralympics objectives to the wide community, in doing so effectively communicating his company’s values. Richard’s commitment and inspiration shone through.
