William Lyttle deserved winner of ITP Apprentice of the Year Award 2010
The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP) is delighted to announce the winner of the ITP Apprentice of the Year Award 2010. The judging panel comprised academics, senior managers, The Journal Board and ITP Board members from various telecommunications companies including BT and Cable&Wireless.
The judges were looking for a balance between the candidates’ contribution to their day job; for other activities that reflected well on their company; for their personal development plans; and for their ambitions.
After extensive searching the judges reviewed the applications of 15 leading candidates, narrowing it down to two outstanding candidates – William Lyttle (Openreach) and Matthew Watson (Telent) with William Lyttle emerging as the deserved winner. The judges also commended Bilal Baig, Jonathon Darlington, Chris Jenkins, Gemma Lake and Kieran Sleath.
William Lyttle impressed the judges on all the criteria. William’s team leadership of the Plug-in Network Terminating Equipment project showed outstanding contribution and achievement that had already been recognised by his employer. William has high educational aspirations. He was class representative to the University whilst completing his Foundation degree and he plans to go on to study for an Honours degree. In addition to being class rep, he also mentored other students in the year below him.
William chose the apprentice route to get experience and has demonstrated self-belief in pursuing that path. The judges believe he has the capability and motivation to progress his career into management grades.
Matthew Watson impressed judges with the progress he had made in a very short time moving into the technical area from a completely different background. Matthew’s identification of a critical problem and his solution has saved Telent significant time. Matthew also helped fellow apprentices. His progress was such that, as his apprenticeship was coming to an end, he was in demand by several areas of the business.
Thanks to all the applicants who applied for the ITP Apprentice of the Year Award.
