Mark Quartermaine, Managing Director, BT Public sector.

Mark Quartermaine

Mark Quartermaine is managing director of BT Public Sector, the part of BT Global Services that helps public sector bodies across the UK achieve network-enabled service transformation.

The business has grown considerably in recent years and is now worth more than £1.4 billion per annum.

Mark is responsible for a market that spans local, central and devolved government, defence and health, supplying everything from traditional telephony services to the expertise in networking and IT organisations need to transform the public services for which they are responsible. Among his business’s many relationships with local government are BT’s pioneering joint ventures with Liverpool City Council, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and two councils in Suffolk: Suffolk County Council and Mid Suffolk District Council.

Within central government, Mark is responsible for BT’s business with clients including Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions, as well as the Ministry of Defence and other defence and security agencies.

Mark came to BT from Cable & Wireless in 2005. Prior to joining C&W, he was chief operating officer and a board member of NSB Retail Solutions, a FTSE 200 company he joined in 2001. There, his responsibilities included running the company's European business and its services globally.

Mark's earlier career was spent at IBM, where he rose from systems engineer to be the worldwide director of marketing for IBM's retail division. In all, he spent 15 years at IBM, which he joined on graduating from Loughborough University in 1984. At IBM, he had also set up and run the company's object technology practice and been general manager of its European POS business.

On joining BT, Mark was given profit and loss responsibility for the company's business with large enterprises. He took on his current role in January 2007.

Once a keen sportsman, Mark still likes to keep fit. Mark enjoys all sports, particularly rugby, cricket, cycling and rowing. He once completed a charity bike ride from London to Paris.

Mark is married with two children, and lives in a house in Ascot that he built himself on returning to the UK from the United States in 2001.
