29th July 2011
Brendan O’Mahony CEO of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP) is delighted to announce Ray Adams, C&W Worldwide as the winner of the ITP Apprentice of the Year Award 2011. This is a notable first for C&W so many congratulations.
The independent judges were most impressed by the distance travelled by Ray since becoming an apprentice. He had managed to turn from being a non-technical person who had left school with GCSEs to become an excellent technician. The judges noted his keenness to help colleagues and his initiative to make a difference to the C&W business as demonstrated by his contribution to a high profile customer project this year.
Laura Johnson from BT Operate came second, the judges commented on her drive and energy and the evidence of her taking several leadership roles (e.g. Chair of the Apprentice Network). Her role as an ambassador for apprentices was also noted.
Shane Allum from BT Operate came third, the judges thought he was an excellent role model and contributed significantly to the business. In particular, the recovery of the Cisco kit and the consequent cost savings to BT. It was also noted that he was invited by the CEO of I&D at Adastral Park to present to the top team.
Brendan congratulated all those who applied this year as through their many achievements they inspire apprentices throughout the telecommunications industry. The awards will be presented in the autumn at an ITP seminar industry event.

Note to editors:
The Institute of Telecoms Professionals inspires members to develop into industry leaders by sharing best practice, innovation and business opportunities.
The ITP encourages apprentices within the telecommunication industry to apply for the national apprenticeship awards and also for the ITP telecoms annual award to raise their profile for excellence and also help them develop their skills and knowledge. The judges (from a cross section of the industry) were looking for a balance between the candidates’ commitment; achievements; outstanding contribution; and exemplar. In addition the judges looked at how far the candidates had developed since joining their company.
