What is Professional Registration?
Qualifications sets a professional engineer/technician apart from those who are not registered. Professional registration therefore identifies you as being a highly competent engineer/technician at the forefront of the industry. Once you have gained professional registration you may use post-nominals after your name e.g. S Jones CEng, MITP.
Professional Registration is therefore an important career milestone for engineers and technicians in the ICT industry. It shows that you are a competent professional, whose skills and knowledge is highly valued by industry peers.
Professional Registration allows you to plan your continuous professional development (CPD) with real structure and direction. It can enhance career prospects; provide higher earning potential and greater status and influence.

Which Professional Registrations are available?
CEng, IEng, EngTechor ICTTech
CEng- Chartered Engineers (CEng) are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They might develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, pioneer new engineering services and management methods. Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess interpersonal skills.
IEng- Incorporated Engineers (IEng) are characterised by their ability to act as exponents of today's technology through creativity and innovation. To this end, they maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. Incorporated Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills.
EngTech- Engineering Technicians (EngTech) are involved in applying proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems. They carry supervisory or technical responsibility, and are competent to exercise creative aptitudes and skills within defined fields of technology. Professional Engineering Technicians contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services. Professional Engineering Technicians are required to apply safe systems of work.
ICTTech– Registered ICT Technicians (ICTTech) work in a range of jobs that involve the support or facilitation of others to use ICT equipment and applications. They are required to use ICT knowledge and understanding when applying technical and practical skills and contribute to the design, development, testing, commissioning, installation, operation, migration or maintenance of ICT products, processes, systems or services.
ICT Technicians accept personal responsibility and use effective communication and interpersonal skills. By registering, they make a personal commitment to a code of professional conduct recognising obligations to the public, the profession and the environment.

What is competence and underpinning knowledge and understanding (UKU)?
Competence is the knowledge, skills and attitude required to perform tasks (i.e. technical ability). The Engineering Council have defined the competence statements for CEng, IEng and EngTech in the UK-Spec Standard. Competence statements for ICTTech are found in the ICTTechstandard.
UKU (i.e. requisite knowledge required) underpins competence and can be demonstrated by exemplifying qualifications already held by candidates. The registration can be very straightforward, especially if you have particular educational qualifications, including;
- CEng accredited Masters Degree (e.g. MEng or MSc)
- IEng accredited Bachelors Degree (e.g. BEng or BSc)
- EngTech accredited diploma level or approved apprenticeship
- ICTTech accredited diploma level or approved apprenticeship
The UK engineering profession has accredited a large number of academic qualifications, which either fully or partially satisfy the education requirements for registration. If the candidate does not hold any of these, then other evidence must be provided to demonstrate understanding to a comparable level as outlined above.

What do I need to do to get a Professional Registration?
Professional Registration is a competence based assessment and as such there is no set time scale for reaching the standard required for registration. This will depend on your own experiences and circumstances.

Can I apply for Professional Registration without any formal qualifications?
Formal qualifications only demonstrate that you have the level of UKU required. If you do not hold a formal qualification but are working at the required level you can explain this, and submit examples as evidence, in your application. Registration is an acknowledgement of your competence.

Do you have a City and Guilds Qualification?
If you hold the City and Guilds Telecommunication Technician's course part II certificate (graduation prior to 1991), it is an Engineering Council recognised qualification which supports the educational underpinning requirements for EngTech registration, as long as you can also provide evidence that you have kept this knowledge up to date. You will need to complete a standard application form.

What is a standard document?
The standard documents outline registrations standard and set out the procedures to be followed and the system of assessment to become professionally registered. This document details the competence and commitment which must be demonstrated in order to achieve registration – and gives examples of how this might be done. What are the costs involved?
Application fees and costs are payable at various stages throughout the registration process. Initial costs are circa £230 for IEng and CEng and circa £80 for EngTech and ICTTech. Annual membership fees are then payable to the ITP, IET and the Engineering Council. Failure to continue paying these annual fees will result in your registration being annulled.

What is a Professional Registration Advisor (PRA)?
PRAs are members with detailed knowledge of the requirements and routes to professional registration. They are able to review individual cases and advise on whether a candidate is ready to apply to the IET for professional registration. They will also be able to advise on the presentation aspect of making a formal application. More information…

What is the role of the supporter/named referee?
The named referee must be comfortable that he or she can confirm that the details provided in the application form are true and correct. He or she will be required to confirm that, in their opinion, the candidate has achieved the standard required for registration. This person can be your employer, a member of the institution or someone that knows you in a work capacity.

What is Competence?
Professional competence integrates knowledge, understanding, skills and values. It goes beyond the ability to perform specific tasks. The formation process through which engineering professionals become competent generally involves a combination of formal education and further training and experience (generally known as professional development). However these different elements are not necessarily separate or sequential and they may not always be formally structured.

What is the relationship between the ITP & IET?
This partnership has been formed between the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) to create a joint Member Registration Agreement specifically for ITP members interested in obtaining professional registration.

I am a current IET member. Can I apply for Professional Registration through the joint IET-ITP programme?
- Yes. provided you do not already have, or are not currently in the process of applying for, a registration (CEng or IEng or EngTech or ICTTech) with the IET.
Can I transfer my EngTech / IEng / CEng registration to the ITP?
- No. Any registration gained through the IET cannot be transferred to the ITP.

I am a Chartered Engineer with another Institution and would like to move my registration to the ITP. Is this possible?
The ITP is not a licensing body. The ITP offers registration through an agreement with the IET. The Engineering Council regulations dictate that it is not possible for a member transfer their current registration to the ITP.

What is a professional development record?
A professional development record is a log of what you have learned throughout your professional development. You can manage your professional development record using the online professional development system, Career Manager. Alternatively, if you would like to keep a paper based professional development record; you can find information on how to get started at www.pd-how2.org.

I am a retired member. Can I apply for professional registration?
Yes, professional registration is available to all current ITP members paying the full or corporate membership rate. Retired members therefore have to pay the full rate of £96 should they wish to apply for professional registration.

I have a CEng/IEng/EngTech/ICTTech registrations with the IET. Can I transfer this to the ITP-IET programme?
No, unfortunately you cannot because professional registrations are not transferable.

Are there ongoing costs? What happens if you do not pay these?
To keep your registration valid you must keep your ITP-IET membership current - costs. If your membership expires you will have to reapply for professional registration, from the start of the process and pay the assessment fees again.

What is the difference between the Engineering Council Certificate of Qualification and the ITP Diploma?
The Engineering Council issues a Certificate of Qualification which is legal certification that the applicant has successfully achieved Chartered Engineer / Incorporated Engineer / Engineering Technician / ICT Technician status. The ITP Diploma is simply recognition of your achievement.
