Stephen Hearnden has a career spanning over 40 years in the ICT sector. He was the Director of Technology at techUK (formerly Intellect) from October 2012 until he left in August 2014. Until recently he was using his industry experience to assist companies in matters relating to telecommunications, broadcasting and spectrum. He is now retired.

Stephen originally joined Intellect in March 2005 as Director of Telecommunications after a successful career as a telecommunications consultant. During that period he was an interim CTO for a North American start-up company and was Programme Manager for the UMTS Forum. Other roles in the mobile sphere included due diligence and expert witness work.

Prior to techUK, his career was in BT as General Manager of the BT Wireless Futures Team responsible for R&D, collaboration, trials and engagements with start-up companies looking at new technology. In the early 1990s he was in an operational role in BT Cellnet, holding the post of CTO for six years during the rollout of analogue cellular and the start of GSM.

He is a member of the Board of editors for the Journal of The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals. Stephen received his degree in Electronics in 1971 from the University of Kent following which he joined the PO now BT. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a fellow of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals and a Chartered Engineer.
