The ITP Christmas Family Lecture

Prof Nigel LingeYour World in Your Hand: 40 Years of the Mobile Phone

Members and, in particular our very young guests, are still talking about last year’s ITP Christmas Lectures, which concluded in Glasgow on 14 December 2013.

Professor Nigel Linge from the University of Salford, a truly enthusiastic supporter of anything linked to communications, delivered entertaining, thought provoking and very educational lectures with numerous mobile phones on hand from the last 40 years. The highlight was definitely the demonstration of how mobile phones work using nothing more than some coloured plastic balls and four buckets.

The audiences were delighted with the content especially the demonstration of the download and upload speed of 4G. After each lecture, the audience were able to touch the various exhibits and chat to Nigel about a variety of topics raised during the lecture.

This year’s ITP Christmas Family Lecture was unique in many ways:

•    It was filmed at The University of Salford. Click here to view it.
•    The Salford event at MediaCity UK was part of a World Record attempt for the most different mobiles together at a public event – this is still being checked, so watch this space!
•    Local radio interviewed Professor Nigel who was able to promote both the ITP and the Christmas Family Lecture.
•    A live demonstration of 4G was conducted during the event.

Some of the feedback from guests included:

“I took my 10 year old son to the talk, and he is still enthusing about it this morning.”

“It was well presented, very comprehensive, accurate, and entertaining.”

“I’ve been in the industry for many years, but I have learned something new today, well done.”

Don’t be too disappointed if you were unable to attend - there will be a related article in the ITP Journal soon, plus the recording taken at the University of Salford will be made available via our website.

The ITP would also like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Nigel Linge who presented on behalf of the University of Salford as part of the university’s programme of supporting education in the community free of charge. We are also very grateful to EE, who supported the lectures by providing 4G equipment and donating a small gift to everyone who attended.
