Hello and welcome to May’s ITP update. Since we last wrote to you we have hosted a great seminar on 5G, if you couldn’t join us on the day, please see below for details of the event and how to access the seminar content.

Following our latest successful seminar at BT Centre on the 16th May, the content from the seminar including presentation slides and pictures is now live on the website for any of you who may have missed out. The full video of the speaker presentations and panel discussion will be up shortly.

You can find it here

For those of you that attended on the day, if you haven’t already done so, we’d be grateful if you could take a few moments to complete the online feedback form

It is only with your valuable feedback that we can build on and improve these events so we do appreciate your time.  We look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you at future ITP events.

Have you set the world on fire with your innovative ideas over the last couple of years?

Are you a recently graduated apprentice who has made a real difference to your business?

Are you THE go to engineer within your company?

If so, we want to hear from you!

The ITP is passionate about people and their careers and we want to recognise the best of the best.

There are a number of different award categories;

This year, we are not only asking for applications from the people that know that they are great, but we know some of you perhaps aren’t as confident - so for the first year we are also allowing nominations from line managers.  You will find all the application and nomination forms on the webpage.

The Christopher Mills Award celebrates apprentices who demonstrate a great use of ICT or maths over and above what is expected.  This award comes with a £500 prize from the Mills family.  You can apply for this award as a standalone award, however all qualifying apprentice of the year applications will automatically be entered.

Applications close on 22nd June 2018, the finalists will be announced in the Summer with the winners announced at our  Annual Dinner on 4th October 2018 at Radisson Blu, Portman Square.

We look forward to seeing you there!

SAVE THE DATE! – Our next Seminar will be on the 20th November @ BT Centre

Joe, our Events and Membership Executive is always hard at work sourcing new behind the scenes locations for you to visit, he’s got some more in the pipeline, to be confirmed soon but in the meantime do take a look below to see the latest visits available to you – don’t forget that if you have an idea or suggestion of a visit, let us know and we will do our best to arrange it.

Blandford Museum – 14th June

Royal Signals

ITP Members will be stepped through a hundred plus years of signalling history, from shutter telegraphs through cable wagons, despatch riders, and World War II radios to Enigma machines and beyond. Special sections are devoted to the SAS, the conflicts in the Falklands, the Gulf, and Afghanistan. There are plenty of hands on exhibits to try, which really helps illustrate and explain how things work. A fine collection of medals is on display demonstrating the gallantry of members of the Royal Signals regiment over the years.

A fascinating museum with plenty of exhibits telling the story of signals in the British armed forces through to modern day, including the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in WWII.  After the guided tour, you will be guided around the Royal Signals Cable Systems Group where you will be shown the teaching facilities and cover the syllabus that the soldiers are being taught.

This is a unique opportunity to receive a guided tour of the museum and see behind the scenes of the cable systems group – access which has never been granted before.  As such there is a small charge to the ITP of £10 per head and we would therefore ask attendees to contribute £5.

Science Museum: Guided tour of the "Information Age" Gallery 14th August 2018

Science Museum

Join ITP members to this guided Tour of the “Information Age” Gallery with the museum’s Curator of Communications.

The Information Age gallery celebrates more than 200 years of innovation and communication technologies.

There are six zones in the gallery, each representing a different technology network: The Cable, The Telephone Exchange, Broadcast, The Constellation, The Cell and The Web. The gallery explores the important events that shaped the development of these networks, from the growth of the worldwide telegraph network in the 19th century, to the influence of mobile phones on our lives today.

Discover how wireless technology saved many lives on the Titanic and spread news of the disaster to the world within hours. You can also hear the personal stories of the operators who worked on the Enfield Telephone Exchange, the last manual exchange.
