Dr Carla Di Cairano‑Gilfedder is a Distinguished Engineer at BT Group Research, leading research and innovation in AI‑driven automation across large‑scale telecoms operations. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Southampton (UK) and has over 20 years’ experience applying advanced mathematics, AI, and operational research to operations, network performance, and security.

Carla has published extensively in leading international journals and conferences and is an inventor on more than 40 patents spanning service assurance, network optimisation, and intelligent infrastructure. She has contributed to numerous UK‑ and EU‑funded research and innovation programmes, working at the interface of industry and academia to translate advanced research into deployable solutions.

Her contributions to the field have been recognised through individual awards, including ITP Innovator of the Year (2025), TechWomen100 (2025), and Highly Commended for Engineer of the Year at the Computing Women in Tech Excellence Awards (2025). She has also received team awards such as the BCS UK IT Industry Award - IT Project Team of the Year (2016), Awards AI -Best Use of AI for Automation (2017), Global Telecoms Business - AIR for Service Delivery (2016), and BT’s Gordon Radley Award for Best Author of Innovation (2005).

Carla serves on Editorial and Advisory Boards, with a particular focus on the industrial application of AI. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, Chartered Engineer, Chartered IT Professional, Member of the British Computer Society, Member of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals and Member of the Operational Research Society.
